The U.S. Department of Agriculture has guaranteed an $80 million loan to Range Fuels, Inc., which is building a biorefinery in Georgia to convert wood chips to biofuels using a two-step thermochemical process. The guarantee is the agency's first to a commercial-scale cellulosic biofuel plant. More

The Interior Department has identified 24 large tracts of public land that could potentially host utility-scale solar power plants. The agency is studying the environmental and resource suitability of the tracts, located in Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, and Utah, with the intent to speed the development of solar power facilities in the West. DOE and the Western Governor's Association released a report on June 15 that identifies 37 "hubs" for renewable energy in the western United States, plus 17 in western Canada and in Baja California. The hubs could yield nearly 200,000 megawatts of renewable power, and DOE and other federal agencies will strive to help make that happen. More
